Not-So-Speedy Dressage
From Endurance to Dressage
I am going to an early evening schooling show on Sunday afternoon, maybe. Speedy whacked his hind leg and it puffed up on Friday morning. He's not lame, but it is filled. I hand walked him twice Friday morning and each time the filling came down a little bit only to puff back up once he was standing still.
I think he whacked it on Thursday morning while I had Sydney over at the neighbor's place grazing. These photos would be 24 hours post whack. I checked him again this afternoon and the filling was still there, but after a ten minute turnout, the filling was gone. He ran around like a lunatic for the better part of an hour and his leg was clean and tight when I put him away (after a thorough hose down). I don't ride until 4:30 on Sunday so I am hoping that gives him time to heal up. I am not worried about the abrasion, it's minor. What concerns me is the filling. As long as it is mostly gone by Sunday, we'll go. If not, we stay home. Click images for captions and to enlarge.

THANK YOU, Kelly RGF. That's what I think, too, but it's hard to load up with a swollen leg. As I write it is 6:45 a.m. and I am just now heading to the barn for a peek. I am 99% sure that I'll go. It helps to hear a confirmation of my own thoughts. Thanks for the good advice.

Hind legs can swell up pretty badly even for a minor scrape. I think that you are smart to be cautious, but you are also most likely right that he will be fine for the show on Sunday. The fact that the swelling is subsiding with exercise and he is not lame are both very good signs. Best wishes, Speedy!

It was still puffy early this morning, but after a light lunge, the swelling started to ease. I gave his a thorough bath and paid a lot of attention to his legs scrubbing and rubbing and hosing repeatedly. This brought even more of the puffiness down. I also hand walked him down to my trainer's and she agreed that the heat is most likely the biggest culprit. Comments are closed.
