Not-So-Speedy Dressage
From Endurance to Dressage
Izzy's heel/pastern is healing, but it is going so slow. Part of the problem is that he keeps trying to chew the bandage off. I have had to get very creative with my wrapping, and he still gets it halfway off by the next day. Late last week I finally decided to put a bell boot over the duct tape. You might wonder why I didn't start with that. You're right, a bell boot would serve as a good protective layer except that Izzy has eaten many, many bell boots. Frankly, this horse is a royal pain in the patootie, and I say that with love in heart. Mostly. Despite ripping off the bandages almost daily, the wound is slowly healing. Each day that I rewrap it, I think it looks even worse than the day before, but by taking a daily photo and comparing them, I can definitely see that the wound is slowly closing in. My vet has seen photos and advised me to keep doing what I am doing, so that's good news. If you're a bit squeamish, scroll fast as the next photos are a bit graphic. > > > > > > > > > > > > >
> > > < < < I went through this the first year that I owned Izzy. I spent an entire year wrapping that horrible wound on his leg. Some days it looked so ugly, and on other days, it seemed nearly healed. I learned through that ordeal that it takes as long as it takes. The best thing I can do is to continue the wrapping regimen and be patient. It's slow progress, but there IS progress. Comments are closed.
