Spending $70 bucks to upgrade to an LHR seems a bit wasteful to me. Speedy is simply eligible for more USDF awards and honors, but he can't get any of those things unless I also upgrade my Group Membership to a Participating Membership. That probably isn't going to happen this year.
But it might ...
There aren't a lot of benefits for Speedy having his LHR, but there are a few.
- He is now eligible to earn USDF Horse Performance Certificates if I join as a Participating Member - $75.00. We would need ten scores of 60% or higher, which is very reachable.
- He is also eligible to win USDF Year-End Awards if I join as a Participating Member. We would have to kick serious butt. My chances aren't worth the $75.00.
- Joining USDF as a Participating Member would also make us eligible to show at the USDF Regional Championship if we qualified. We would need to earn two qualifying scores of at least 62% in designated Qualifying Classes. That's also very doable.
- He is eligible for an All Breeds Award if I join as a Participating Member AND join AHA and pay all of their fees - $75.00 + at least $110 annually. Only the top five horses get a certificate. Again, the chance of Speedy being one of the top 5 First Level Arabians in the country (or region) is virtually non-existent.
Speedy might not ever get to use his LHR number, but at least it's a one-time expense and doesn't need to be renewed annually. It's paid for so that if I want to upgrade my membership in the future, it will be one less thing to pay for.
How much are you willing to pay for "the chance" of an award?
